On the Gia Carangi network JL posted
Elyssa was a very intelligent and likable young woman when I first met her back in 1977; long before she hooked up with Gia. She was dating the son of a very prominent Philadelphian and appeared to have the world by the tail. When Gia told me she was living with her in Atlantic City, I had mixed feelings. I felt some comfort in knowing Gia wasn't living alone but I feared the worst and my fears proved warranted. They both needed a strong clean and sober guidance to drive them into and keep them focused on recovery. Instead they supported each other's weakness for drugs. It was not a good time for the Carangis or the Goldens. This was not the life anyone who knew them would have expected them to be living. Thinking back, nobody thought they were at the end of the road. We all thought, they would put this ugly unhappy time behind them. That's the horror of AIDS, it takes away your second chance and robs you of God's grace and mercy. JL
John, can you elaborate more on how and where you first met Elyssa in 1977?

A friend of mine worked for her boyfriend’s father. He and I had gone to an afternoon party in a wealthy Philadelphia suburb. My friend introduced me to her and her boyfriend. The next time I remember seeing her, she was with Gia at the Hoagie City in Atlantic City and she reminded me of our first meeting. I spoke to Kathy about it today and she said she was engaged to marry somebody but we weren’t sure if it was the guy I had met back in 77. JL

What did she look like John? I have only ever seen a blurred picture of her in the Stephen Fried book.

how come you never said she looked pretty? ...it wouldn't be Gia to be drawn to a not-so-pretty woman, don't you agree?

So don't expect much more from me on this topic. JL I don't think 5'3" is that short. Gia wasn't necessarily that tall either. The only other information we know about Elyssa Golden is that from Fried. I know some people have sent him questions regarding Elyssa. I think if he has the time he might be able to answer some since he did interview her personally for Thing of Beauty. I recall him saying that she was attractive. Not as attractive as Gia I suppose. Perhaps, there might be a copy of Elyssa's yearbook somewhere. It might include pictures of her. They have Gia's online.

Ok, I was a little confused. So Elyssa did have AIDS/HIV. I thought she was free of the disease so that surprised me. Thank you for clearing it up.

Am I incorrect in assuming that Elyssa/"Rochelle" is the girl that Gia was dancing with (the ABC's) in the clip of her homemovie on Jackie Beam's website? That girl was shorter than Gia and also blonde. Was this not Elyssa? Whoever can answer....a reply would be great!

Hey greatturle
The girl she was dancing with in the ABC video was Sandy Linter, the make up artist. The only picture i have ever seen of Elyssa was that one in the Stephen Fried book. I dont even know if there was video footage of Elyssa anywhere.

HOw long did they actually date? In Thing of Beauty, it seemed as if they dated for 3 or 5 years on and off.
